What Are Extreme Sports?


An extreme sport can be defined as any activity that has a real or perceived high level of danger. This can be anything from bungee jumping to hang gliding, scuba diving to snowboarding and rock climbing to extreme ironing – literally anything that gets your adrenaline pumping can be classed as extreme! Originally extreme sports were associated with adult sports such as those described above, however the term now includes sports like skateboarding and bmxing which are popular with teens too.

The history of the term 'extreme sports' is quite often associated with Ernest Hemingway who stated 'there are only three sports – bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering, all the rest are games'. Whether you agree with this statement or not, it is clear that from as far back as the 1950s the term was associated with sports that could lead to death.

Most extreme sports are solitary activities although there are some exceptions to the rule such as paintballing (yes it really is extreme when you get into a game) and white water rafting which are clearly both team sports. Most people become interested in one or many at a young age and they usually only get a coach if they wish to take the sport further – this is clearly different to other sports such as football and swimming for example.

Another difference between extreme sports and normal sports is that the performance of a sportsman is not as clear cut. For example, a person's ability to rock climb is evaluated on more subjective and aesthetic criteria, rather than on a speed or score level. With every mountain being different, and the variables also changing in the other sports, it just isn't possible to create a set performance system. Of course, this isn't the case for all extreme sports but it is the norm for most.

Nowadays there is even an international competition that celebrates these sports known as the x games. This includes people participating in extreme sports in a controlled environment. It began in 1995 in the United States and it is now a hugely watched competition throughout the world. A Binocular View of the New Yankee Stadium


I’m one to always carry binoculars around in case I miss something. By missing something, I mean not seeing something up close and personal; or not seeing the larger and enhanced version of a particular shot or frame. Obviously for birding, binoculars work. One can only get so close to a nest of baby robins or a sparrow’s bird house without being disruptive or intrusive. Binoculars enable you to remain at a nice distance and still check in on the birds and see a great deal. A mother robin feeding and protecting the family can be clearly viewed from 100 feet or more without feeling like you’re hovering near the ‘invasion of privacy’ boundary.

Bringing binoculars to a ball game, however, is not the same as using binoculars for birding. As a true baseball AND NY Yankees fan, I am often a little torn as to whether or not I should I bring my binoculars to the Stadium. If I don’t bring them I will still see the game just fine. Being obsessive about not wanting to miss a single pitch, I feel that viewing the action through binoculars sometimes takes away from the pure enjoyment of watching baseball. On Friday, the day before my friend and I were to attend the Yankees-Phillies game, I realized that I had lent my Leupold 8X30 Yosemite Binoculars to friend. The Leupold 8X30’s are my personal favorite for viewing baseball. Not a problem, I had my Carson YK 10X42’s ready (I use these mainly for birding). They aren’t as light, and I wasn’t sure how the extra weight would work out for a three hour game. And much to my surprise, I found the weight to be not a factor at all. And with the extra magnification, the close-ups were more intimate. Sitting in section 215, in between third base and the left field foul pole, they certainly came in handy.

As for taking away from the pure enjoyment, we picked our spots and it really worked out perfectly. I mean, what baseball fan is going to watch an entire game through binoculars anyway? That’s pretty ridiculous. We got to our seats about 45 minutes before first pitch and got some close views of the players during warm-ups, stretching, etc. It was also really cool to see players conversing with one another, sometimes smiling and laughing. We saw Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon laughing pretty hard after a short conversation that took place at 2nd base; with the Phillies’ short-stop, Jimmy Rollins. We immediately wanted to know what these two stars (from opposing teams) were talking about. That’s what is so fun about seeing a live game. Experiencing the personal connection between two regular guys that just happen to make a lot of money playing baseball… makes fans become even bigger fans. With my Carson YK 10X42’s, the experience was definitely better than it would have been if we had not brought them. And had I not lent out my Leupolds, I never would have learned that a full-size 10×42 binocular actually work very well for viewing a baseball game.

As for the game itself, we were able to get some close-ups at key points in the game when we felt so inclined. At the end of the eighth inning, the Yanks were down 4-2. With the wind kicking up a little bit, we contemplated leaving early to get some dinner. Up to then, the Yanks looked pretty terrible at the plate. Obviously at this point, we did not know that we were about to witness the best walk-off win of the season; in a season that has already had several. Thankfully we stayed. With one out in the bottom of the ninth and Damon on first, I viewed Alex Rodriguez through my 10X42’s for each pitch thrown by the Phillies pitcher, and last year’s best closer in both leagues, Brad Lidge. In hind sight, I never would have known how great the at-bat was without the binoculars. With a 3-2 count, A-Rod connected, and then posed-just like he always does when he knows he just hit one out of the park. We watched the ball fall into the right field …

The Morgan Four Four Sports Car


A review of The Morgan Four Four Sports Car, covering development, important features, and technical data of this the second model in the Morgan range.

In this Article, I offer a nostalgic look at the Morgan Four Four, one of an elite group of classic cars, which was manufactured during the period 1936 to 1950.

In 1936, Henry Morgan and his son visited Ford’s new factory in Dagenham.

Following the visit, he confirmed his intention that Morgan was to remain a small and flexible company, and would not follow the route of mass production.

He intended to follow in the footsteps of men like Donald Healey, who were car enthusiasts at heart, and whose philosophy was that of being product rather than process led.

By 1936, the Morgan Three Wheeler sports car had been in continuous production for 27 years, in which time some 30,000 units had been built.

However, the introduction of small, economical, mass produced cars spelt the death knell for the three wheeler.

The company’s answer was to design and build a completely new car which had four wheels, not three.

The new model was named the Morgan Four Four sports car.

The prototype was rigorously tested both in trials and on the track, and was finally launched at Motor Shows in both London and Paris.

The title “Four Four”, chosen to differentiate it from the previous three wheelers, confirmed it had four wheels, not three, and four cylinders, not two.

The car had a steel chassis with steel, later replaced by aluminium, body panels on an ash frame, which gave it the necessary strength and light weight required in a sports car.

The 4-4 was an immediate success.

The original two seater Morgan 4-4 convertible, launched in 1936, was the most sought after of the three variants.

Up to 1939, the car was powered by a 1122 cc Coventry Climax engine, developing 34 bhp.

Beyond this, it was replaced by the Special 1267 cc, overhead valve engine, developing 39 bhp, uniquely supplied by the Standard Motor Company.

Prior to 1938, it incorporated a four speed Meadows gearbox, which was then replaced by an equivalent Moss unit, fitted in the centre of the chassis, and connected to the back axle by a short prop shaft.

The car used 8 inch Girling drum brakes, activated by a rod and cable.

In 1937, the four seater variant was announced, also using the Coventry Climax engine.

Then, in 1938, and using the same chassis, the drophead coupe was launched.

This was an elegant touring car, with high doors, a distinctive windscreen, permanent window frames, and a small wooden panel at roof level which allowed the hood to be closed easily and effectively.

The early model was fitted with the Coventry Climax engine, which was later changed to the 1267 cc Special engine from the Standard Motor Company.

After WW2, all versions of the 4-4 were fitted with the Standard 1267 cc engine, and continued to be built until 1950, when succeeded by the larger Morgan Plus Four.

The 4-4 Series further reinforced Morgan’s reputation for quality, performance sports cars.

Morgans acquitted themselves well in road races, such as the RAC Rally, as well as the famous Tourist Trophy in which, in 1937, a Morgan 4-4 won on handicap.

Based on the 1937 winning 4-4, a new limited edition model, called the TT Replica, was showcased, with a distinctive sloping rear panel, and sporting a single spare wheel.

Another limited edition model, called the Le Mans Replica, was based on the 4-4 entered in the Le Mans 24 hour race of 1938 and 1939.

In 1937, a small number of modified cars were built for the race track, and featured 1098 cc Coventry Climax engines, with balanced crankshafts, developing 42 bhp.

In 1938, a works tuned Morgan 4-4, with a novice driver, was entered in the Le ans 24 hour race, and finished 13th overall.

The following year, the car finished 15th overall, and second in class at Le Mans.

Around this time, two noteworthy trials were undertaken:

  • A Ford V8 Pilot engine, developing 22 bhp, was fitted to a Morgan chassis, and produced an impressive performance
  • An Arnott supercharger,

Badminton Rackets Through The Years


When it comes to racket sports, badminton and tennis and even squash share a very similar appearance with regard to the rackets used. Badminton rackets have been constructed primarily from wood throughout their history and into the 1960’s.

These rackets tended to be oval shaped and used gut type strings. The handles that were used were designed with comfort in mind, rather than performance, grip, or style. In the 1960’s, however, metal racket frames began to become popular. These rackets also started to combine wood and metal, which allowed the top players in the world to gain more control of the shuttlecock and points during matches.

Wood by itself had suddenly proven to be limiting, not only in the shape but also in the tension that could be added to the strings. Tension allows a player to have more or less control and also to determine the power of the shots played depending on the tightness of the tension.

In the latter part of the 1960’s, aluminum frames were becoming more popular. This allowed a variety of manufacturers and well known brand names to produce different racket styles more inexpensively. As a result, players were afforded more choices and were then able to find the right racket that would have the best feel for them. It was no longer a one-size-fits-all approach.

During the 1970’s and throughout the 1980’s, carbon composite badminton rackets hit the market and these were lighter than ever. These rackets tended to be less durable than their aluminum counterparts, but allowed manufacturers the opportunity to experiment with different composites, such as part aluminum/part carbon fiber, which ultimately paved the way for graphite in the 1990’s.

When titanium was added to graphite composite rackets during the 1990’s, manufacturers had found a great blend of the lightest materials with the best durability. Players were able to increase power and control as well as add speed to their game. The stronger composites also allow for tighter string tensions, though not quite as tight as aluminum would allow. With just the right combination of composites and strength, any player could find the ideal tension that suited his or her game perfectly. These advances have allowed the major sports racket manufacturers to produce a wide range of badminton rackets to suit all levels of player ranging from the beginner to the professional tournament competitors.

It’s interesting to see how similar the progression has been with regard to badminton rackets and tennis and squash rackets. Innovations within one sport have carried over to these other racket sports allowing many top brands and well known names to produce high quality rackets for tennis, squash and badminton.

Confidence is a feeling of assurance that you can complete the task successfully with ease, in fact you scarcely consider the task at all! It may be a task related to your work or home life, something you practise daily: such as public speaking, teaching, child rearing, cooking or it may be confidence in a sport, that you know you play well.

Whatever areas you feel confident in, you feel good about yourself. Especially when you are faced with these tasks.

Many of us have areas in our lives we would love to feel more confident. So how can we achieve this, when are lives are so busy. Training and guidance from experts together with lots of practice, plus belief in yourself with all boost the feeling of confidence and expertise.

Compare the first time you tried to drive a car to you confidence years later. Consider how new Mums’ feel with their first-born, especially if they do not have younger siblings. Confidence can be learned and developed in all areas and will make you a more rounded happier person.

Sometimes teachers and parents influence how confident we feel, by being critical in childhood, but as adults we can take control of our lives and change this.

I am confident in most areas of my life, but would hate to speak in public, and I am a complete technophobe. The very thought of anything technical sends me in a spin. So these and a few others are my areas that need some work! So which are you areas will you be improving this year? A new year is a great time to start something new, what will your challenge be?

So to sum up: lack of confidence is natural, to improve in any area get good training and practise you new skills knowing you are improving in that area. Have belief in your efforts and enjoy compliments.
